ROGER E. TOPHAM
ATTORNEY AT LAW
PRACTICE AREAS
CIVIL RIGHTS
Every person in the United States—regardless of citizenship or other status—possesses certain rights granted to them by the Constitution. If the government violates one of those rights, our legal system is supposed to provide a remedy. This is a core area of my practice, and a primary reason I decided to switch professions and become an attorney. I cannot list every imaginable civil rights violation here, but some that are most often the subject of lawsuits include police misconduct (such as false arrests and the use of excessive force) and prisoners' rights violations (which frequently overlap with medical malpractice).
EMPLOYMENT
RIGHTS
Employees are generally at an inherent disadvantage against their employers when it comes to bargaining leverage. Employers know this and frequently abuse it. Recognizing the need for stronger advocacy for the rights of employees is another principal reason I decided to become an attorney. I have handled employment cases of all kinds, including unlawful discrimination of various types (race, disability, gender, religion), sexual harassment, whistleblower retaliation, and violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (such as a failure to pay overtime).
PERSONAL INJURY
Personal injury is a very broad category of torts that includes vehicle accidents, premises liability (for example, the classic "slip and fall"), and product liability, as well as nearly any other kind of physical injury.
OTHER PLAINTIFFS' LITIGATION
I have experience in a number of other areas, such as legal and medical malpractice, contract disputes, and product liability. There are simply too many potential types of cases a plaintiff may have to list here.
Furthermore, a particular problem may not fit neatly into a single area of law, or you may not know the technical term for the issue you are facing. If you find yourself in any situation in which you think you need legal help, call me. If I cannot help you myself, I will do my best to direct you to resources that can.
